Sparkling Blueberry Smoothie & Italian Ice

Fruit is my go-to snack in the summer, so smoothies are naturally right up there on the list! I don't usually ever use a recipe when it comes to smoothies, but after I made this concoction, I figured I better document it because it was just that good!

In a blender, mix frozen blueberries (New Jersey has the best!), handful of ice, one nectarine, one frozen banana and top it off with sparkling wine. I used MARTINI & ROSSI® Sparkling Rosé. All that is next to do is blend and enjoy!

Another summer snack I love is Italian Ice. I am not sure if that is a North East thing because Dustin had never even heard of it, as well as a few others. But basically, it is simply amazing! My favorite kind is Rita's Italian Ice which started in Pennsylvania. Aren't all the best snack foods from Pennsylvania? I do believe this to be true...but then again, most great things come from PA? Wink Wink! I joke, I joke!

So, considering there are only four Rita's in all of TN, none of which are in Nashville, this home-made version does just the trick. Simply take the blended smoothie and pour it into little jars or cups. Freeze. And once again, Enjoy! Mmm! ♥, mK

Happy Memorial Day!

Happy post-Memorial Day! I hope you each had a wonderful holiday! Dustin and I were incredibly thankful for a day full of friends and some of their family. It surely adds to making our new city feel a bit more like home! We had a picnic and frisbee in the park, BBQ'd with friends and their family, went out for ice cream, a trip to a good ole fashioned nearby lemonade stand, and more! It was such a refreshment of a day! And, of course, we remember that we can have days of absolute freedom like so thanks to all the men and woman who gave their lives! It is a pretty humbling thing to know there are people who will give up their lives for our daily comforts, which I often take for granted. It is good to be reminded of how truly blessed we all are! Have a great Tuesday! ♥, mK

Send Something Good

This past month, I took part in a really fun blogger gift exchange project called Send Something Good. It was hosted by three bloggers, Gentri Lee, Kaitlyn and Kristy where basically any blogger could sign up and these three ladies assigned us to another blogger, one to send something good to and one to receive something good from!

I was given the opportunity to send something to Eryka over at the blog ABCDE. I had fun exploring her blog and coming up with items to place in her package. I made her this banner to represent her blog at home! It was fun taking the time to put it together and I heard from her that she already hung it in her home, which makes me soo happy to hear! Next, I sent her a pair of Suubi earrings because on her blog she spoke about loving to connect with characters in books and movies. I chose to send her these earrings because every piece of Suubi jewelry you buy, it comes with a story of the artisan that made it! I thought she might like to connect with her story while wearing some cute new earrings! Then of course, I topped off the package with one of my favorite cards! I love Marie Engelbreit + the saying on the card is soo fantastic and true! It was fun getting to know a bit about Eryka through this project, and if you want to get to know her too...visit her blog HERE!

A few weeks ago, I received my Send Something Good package in the mail. It was soo much fun to find a notice in my mail box saying there was a package! I love getting mail, and packages are like the cherry on top! It was from Eron at the blog In the Hopeful Kitchen! She is from the West Coast and sent me some fun things that represent her area! I loved it. She included two photo cards taken by her! They were so beautiful and they made the perfect Mother's day cards! Next, a pair of super fun shell earrings made by a jewelry artist in Southern California! I love jewelry, especially big, dangly earrings! Perfect choice, Eron! Dark Chocolate made it's way into the package...need I say more?? Bound to be a winner in my book! Also in the package, flower seeds! This was such a neat gift to receive, because I have been eying buying flowers and vegetable plants at the store almost every time I go, but just don't feel like I should spend the money. So this little detail really blessed my heart! And finally, she included some whole grain waffle mix which my husband thoroughly enjoyed on a breakfast for dinner sort of night!

This was such a fun project to be a part of and I just want to say a huge thanks to the lovely hosts and my dear exchange blogger, Eron! Your gift was so awesome to receive! Thank you soo much! Today, I am linking up with the rest of the girls who participated, so feel free to browse below and see what everyone else sent and received! To learn more about Send Something Good, go here! Happy Monday & Memorial Day! ♥, mK

May Book Club Review + Link-Up

Welcome Book Clubbers! I have been so looking forward to this day as I am very curious of what ya'll thought of Bloom! For those of you who are only hearing about The Book Club now, allow me to take a moment and explain. This past month, Kaylee from All things Bright and Beautiful, Aubrey from The Kinch Life as well as myself have come together to host a monthly book club. We announce the book, which had been voted on the month previously, at the beginning of each month - you get the book, read it and then the last Friday of that month, we all come together and share our reviews, thoughts, loves, things you don't quite fancy, etc. by linking up on any of the three host's blogs. (Your post link will show up on all of the three blogs) Then, click on any of the other fellow book clubbers links and read their reviews (also in the comment section), mingle a bit and get to know other bloggers through the common bond of the book of choice! Didn't get to participate this month? No problem, just join right in this June, no one is excluded from this club! And your not a blogger? No problem, leave your comment on any blog to interact!

May's book of the month was "Bloom" by Kelle Hampton and here is my take on it...

If Kelle can have the courage to be so honest, I should too. There were definitely moments I wanted to slam the book closed and shout, "Seriously, Kelle??". But, I am so glad I didn't. A, because it is a beautiful book full of photos of Kelle and her adorable family and I wouldn't want to damage it!! And B, because Kelle's journey is absolutely beautiful. She doesn't spare us any details, the same details that made me want to scream in frustration, mind you. But, I felt it extremely refreshing in the end. Kelle really takes you through her story as if you were actually there. She lets you see her darker days that later allow you to understand the absolute fullness of just how beautiful her blossomed love for her daughter is. It takes a certain level of humility to share as Kelle did and she surely possesses such humility. I'm not so sure I'd be able to open myself up to that degree of vulnerability in a public way. Gosh, even in writing this post I tend to get a little nervous of being mid-understood. She is a woman of intense courage of which I firmly admire.

I am a natural relator. So when I saw that this book received the most votes and the decision was made, I figured it would be a breeze to read and understand seeing as though I have a brother with special needs. However, the first few chapters proved this just was not the case. I honestly got very very sad with Kelle and the feelings she felt in response to her daughter's diagnosis. I thought, "How can you possibly see it this way??" In a sense it almost felt like she was rejecting my brother along with Nella. For me, at such a young age, I recall knowing my brother had some extra care required but it was never a question of whether I would love him like a brother or not. I say this not to make light of her emotions, just to explain why it was hard for me to relate. I realize now that I have been given a gift (much like Lainey and Kelle's step sons now have, thanks to Kelle & her husband's journey) that I can't take for granted. Having a slightly different family member is the norm to me and reading Kelle's process of healing resulted in being incredibly insightful. It gave me a new perspective into how my parents (or other parents of special needs kids) quite possibly felt when they first brought my brother home from Romania and realized he did not function quite the same as the rest of us kids. I can't wait for my mom to finish the book so I can hear her response! (You can read a bit about our journey here in an interview with my mom!)

Kelle's story is her own and it is a powerful one; dark parts and all. And since we learned how big a fan of beer Kelle is in her book, I'd like to make a toast to Kelle and say "Thank you for your courage to share the depth of your journey. Thank you for being bold in showing people your beautiful story of transformation & love. Many will be blessed by your words!"

In conclusion to my conclusion; I really enjoyed the book despite how much it hurt to read parts of it. Challenge is good. Hearing other peoples perspective is good. Seeing healing, restoration and beauty - it's very good! And now, following her blog is really special!

Now, it's your turn! What did you think of the book? I am really really interested to see all the different perspectives and what stood out the most to each person! Share & Link Up below! (If you leave a comment below, check back or subscribe to comments for responses!!) ♥, mK
P.S. Stay tuned for June's Book! We'll announce it June 1st!

O Jolie Work Space

My sister, Erin, the designer of O Jolie Jewelry, is also a mother to 4 & 1/2 and a loving wife to one! Late at night or in the silence of nap time, she works hard at her business. She first worked out of a brief case, usually setting up shop at the kitchen table. Then she moved on to a tiny desk in the corner of the kitchen, but just a few weeks ago, my thoughtful brother in law, Chris, re-modeled their mud room to make room for some work space for Erin.

They now live in the farm house I grew up in, so I know this room well. We always used it for dirty shoes, sports equipment, a place for our dog in bad weather, etc. Just beyond this room is the family room and just beside, through the windows, is the kitchen.

Chris knocked out the windows, making a wide open space between the kitchen/dinning area and the newly remodeled combination sun room/foyer/workspace. Because the kitchen also has an entrance way into the family room, they replaced the windowed-door with a solid re-finished door. Some new white paint, re-arranged furniture and a great set of metal drawers for Erin's desk later, you have this beautiful new area. I love it! They did such an incredible job! Don't you think?

You can see all that Erin makes in her shop here! Enjoy! ♥, mK

Growing Pains

Some days, writing is like pulling teeth for me. With every sentence I begin to form, I can hear the words in the back of my head saying "Give Up". It would be so much easier -- closing the computer, grabbing a cookie from the kitchen and crashing on the couch to watch another episode of The Office. It would be nice in the beginning, relaxing instead of working intensely to put on paper what my heart is trying to say, but in the end I know I'd just be left exactly where I was an hour earlier -- but with a stomach fuller and another to-do item left unchecked.

Blogging is such an interesting thing. Truly, it is. It is far from what I thought it would be when I started over a year ago. It has opened many new doors into my life, some great and some a bit more tricky. I've met wonderful friends, learned great new tips for projects, learned some valuable lessons in business and saw new perspective in so many different topics of life. And for the amount of positive that has come from entering the blogging community, it makes it more than worth it.

But, like most things in life, there is always another side to the card. Really though, what is a lesson if you never face a trial? That would be a dull and uneventful journey. Hard work and endurance would not be necessary, creativity would be something different entirely. Like clockwork, I have almost come to expect that "next level lull". Think about it, when you start something new, it's exciting. It's fun. The newness is intoxicating. Then... you begin to grow. You stretch out your raw talent and prepare to tap into the creative bits of you that are not as easy to access. And these parts of you are best sustained with dedication, endurance, a pinch of structure and some hardcore discipline. The fun can still be there, but it has changed it's looks.

Soon enough, you are in a routine. The once hard stretch to reach that new level of creativity is no longer work, it feels natural. Until... it doesn't anymore. It begins to feel too stale to be normal and your exploration-hungry self wants to again reach for something deeper, something more valuable, something....much...much harder to attain. And so the cycle repeats itself.

In more areas than one, I face this. Many of us do - in jobs, in growing family, in relationships. We want to go deeper, get better, be more real. We want to grow.

In blogging, I look back at the 14 + months that I have been writing post after post after post and I think of all the little achievements I have felt. My first comment. My first giveaway. My first paid sponsor. My first ad. 25 followers, 50, 100 ...400. It is a sweet reward to the hard work I had to put in to obtain each goal.

But, even with every level-goal reached, I begin to again feel the ache to expand, to fling open that new window to let in some fresh air, some new inspiration. But this time, my next-dream's enemy has come to battle it off and his name is LIE. In fact, there's a few of em! The kind that tell me I suck because... A few followers are lost, a low stats day, no comments, not as adorable as the "Miss Highly Successful Blogger" bookmarked on my browser, awful lighting for the photos of a DIY project.....no inspiration to write.

It's there at the cross roads I can put my foot to the road and push forward. Or, I can sit down and let myself be overtaken with discouragement. The choice is always mine. The choice is always yours. Growing pains. That's all it is. And just like you eventually grew into your feet as a kid and your legs stopped aching, so this season will too.

For all you bloggers out there, struggling in the comparison game, facing obstacles of any kind, feeling insecure, unable to voice your heart clearly, unable to grow the business side, wanting to excel your creativity -- You are not alone. Don't give up. "Far and away the best prize that life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing. " -Theodore Roosevelt

Your passion, your dream, your creativity is WORTH fighting for. So, do it! ♥, mK

Truck!

Shirts: Roya, Jeans: H&M, Shoes: Steve Madden,
 Jewelry: Charlotte Russe

This weekend was one of those weekends where you just realize again that moving, even seven months later, is just plain tough. The past two days each had moments where we wished we could be bbq'n with family or out with a group of friends, but instead found ourselves at home at a table for two. These things just take time and though we have made some great friends and found a spectacular church, we still have those days where we wish life felt a bit more like home. In time. In time.

Dustin and I had to laugh at ourselves late Saturday night. We had spent far to much of the evening whining to each other about how it would be so much more fun if we could do this or do that, when we finally decided to quit the chatter and just be silly and have fun with what we've got. So, at around midnight, we gathered up our patio chairs, two mugs of coffee-to-go and headed out to a wide open lawn by our semi-busy, nearby road. Somehow, our little retreat to the lawn turned into a competitive game of "Truck", where we fought for the title of the person to spot the most trucks! It ended up being a highlight of the weekend, despite the fact our neighbors probably thought we were the biggest hicks alive.

Life isn't always what we expect it will be, but in the moments that lead us to improvise, we can sometimes find something better than we had hoped for! I am thankful for my husband and his willingness to listen to me when I am sad and be silly with me when I need to get over it! ♥, mK

Coffee with Nicole

Hey Friends! Today I have a special treat, Nicole from Little Moments in Life is here with a post that I know so many of us can relate to. I know for sure I can! As Nicole will invite you, grab a cup of coffee, hear from the beautiful heart of Nicole and then link up below and share your posts (or leave a comment) on your dreams and how you can relate! Have a wonderful day!  ♥, mK
--------
Hi ladies! I am so excited to be hanging out with Mary Kate today! I have been following (and loving) her blog for a few months now and am so happy to be here! My name is Nicole and I am the writer behind Little Moments In Life. While I am still finding my little place in this blogging world, I love sharing my heart and family and hope you will come by to visit.

I have had some things on my heart lately about life in general and where ours is going to take us, so I decided to share a little bit of my thoughts with you today. Go ahead and grab a cup of coffee and sit with me…

It’s funny to look back on where you were a few years ago and then see where you are now. Is it what you wanted? What you expected? Have you worked towards your goals or found yourself falling farther away from where you really want to be?

My life is not exactly what I expected it to be. In some ways it is so much better and I couldn’t be happier. In other ways it motivates me to stop doing some of the mundane things in my life that I know do not make up who I am or who I want to be; be BOLD and make some changes.

It can be exhilarating to think what change could bring into your life. I am the type of person that likes to have some type of constant change…big or small. I get bored if I do the same things everyday and have to find ways to “mix it up” a little bit.

Sometimes it can be hard to talk about your dreams or new things you want to try because I think all of us fear failure or disappointment and we can be our worst critics. But if that is how we live our life, always being careful and never stepping out of the ordinary, then we will never find our true purpose in life.

What dreams do I have? I have several, but I’ll share one with you now. I’ve wanted to be a published writer for a very long time. I accomplished this dream for the first time about 5 years ago when a magazine decided to take a chance on me. Since then I have published over 40 articles with several local and national magazines. But that’s not where my dream stops. You see, this has become the comfortable part of my dream. I have no fear when it comes to writing for a magazine or approaching them with a new idea. Where do I really want to go from here? I want to write/publish/sell a novel. And I want it to be a success. I have been putting this off for YEARS. Why? I’m not sure. I blame it on not having the time. This is not completely untrue. I work a 40 hour work week, am a freelance writer, started a blog, I’m a wife and a mother to a 3 year old little boy….so where is my free time? It’s nonexistent. But isn’t that the story for every writer? Didn’t they all have a family and full time job when they wrote their first book? It’s easier said than done, but I have to at least try or I’ll never see my dream unfold.

What are your dreams? Do you find that you hold yourself back sometimes? It can be scary to go for what you really want in life, but that’s no way to live, now is it? I am here in hope that we can inspire each other to never give up on our dreams and to live life to the fullest, just as we were intended to do.

I hope you will stop by Little Moments In Life and say hi! Thank you so much MK for having me today! It’s always fun being a guest of yours!

Dear Jacquelyn

I couldn't wait any longer. I just couldn't even wait til tomorrow. Some good friends of Dustin and mine belong to one of the most musically talented families I think I have ever come across. Sure, you have families that have one, maybe two singers/musicians, but last time I checked, I don't know a family of this size that has soo much vocal ability! I am not a big youtube subscriber -- Unfortunately, I just don't have time to do blogging plus all the other things I do, plus watch all the latest youtube videos. But, Jacquelyn is the acceptation! ...And I ALWAYS look forward to her (and her sisters) new videos.

Jacquelyn is the youngest of six kids and at age 15, you are hardly going to believe your ears when you hear her voice. It's unreal. Then, go ahead and pair her with any one of her siblings and you will pee yourself. I'm sorry, that's graphic, it's just plain truth. A few weeks ago, at one of our friends' outdoor shindigs, Jacquelyn serenaded us with a song that left even the professional vocalist in the group with a dropped jaw! I promised myself I couldn't keep this to myself any longer. You absolutely must check out her youtube channel.

And dear Jacquelyn, I have a request! Will you sing Demi Lovato's Give your Heart a Break for me? Or, any song by Lauryn Hill? I would love it so much!

Seriously, enjoy! ♥, mK

Chocolate Chip Banana Cupcakes

Watch out for those sneaky bananas. You know the kind, the rebels of the bunch that look just perfect one day but in the next, are nearly all brown. The little stinkers are just begging to escape death-by-eating and would rather rot in their arrogance as the triumphant brown banana. Not this time! I've found a recipe that will win the battle everytime. Hear me rebel banana? Every time!

These Chocolate Chip Banana cupcakes are rich, moist and super sweet. To make these cupcakes, you will need: 1/2 c. butter (or butter), 1 c. sugar, 1 egg, 1 c. mashed bananas, 12 oz. chocolate chips, 1 tsp. baking soda, 1 tbsp. water, 1 1/2 c. unbleached flour, 1 tsp. nutmeg, 1 tsp. vanilla. Cream together your butter and sugar. Next add the egg and mashed ripe banana. Dissolve the baking soda in the water and add to the mixture. Beat in flour, vanilla and nutmeg, then stir in the chocolate chips. Fill your muffin tin with cupcake liners, then add your batter to each paper liner. Bake at 375 for 12-15 minutes. Cool, then frost.

For the icing, I chose a creamy chocolate frosting. Feel free to venture out in another flavor. However, if you do choose to go with chocolate, you will need: 4 tablespoons butter, 1/2 cup packed brown sugar, 2 tablespoons milk, 1 1/2 cups confectioners' sugar, 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. Next, take the butter and brown sugar and melt them together in a saucepan over medium heat. Add milk once the sugar is dissolved. Bring it to a boil then remove from heat. Blend cocoa and confectioners sugar, then add to the butter mixture. Add the vanilla. Quickly spread over cooled cupcakes as the frosting sets fast.

Now give yourself a pat on the back for conquering those pesky bananas! Enjoy! ♥, mK

Lookbook & Vote

Light Gives Heat, the spectacular non-profit that I so often speak of (Because they are so awesome), is in the running for 50,000 George Washingtons! And, you don't have to just sit back and cross your fingers hoping they win it, you can help! Watch the video above from Cultivate Wines to see how it works, then vote...and vote for Light Gives Heat!

In order to see LGH win the 50K, I along with many others, have committed to voting everyday for 60 days. I receive an email each day reminding me to vote, it's that simple!  Almost too simple that it would be ridiculous not to take 5 seconds each day to click one button! I want to ask you for a moment; will you join me? Will you vote everyday until the end of the campaign?

If you are new to my blog or you have never heard of Light Gives Heat, allow me to provide a short explanation. LGH is a non-profit here in the US that provides consistent incomes where there once was none for women in Uganda through fashion. How fashion? Women are employed in hand crafting each piece in the jewelry line, Suubi as well as the handbag line, EPOH. Recently, they launched their brand new BOLD collection. Check out the lookbook! My friend Megan did an amazing job with it! Learn much much more about what else they do on their website, including the award winning film, "Moving On".

So, VOTE today right HERE and then grab a button and put it on your blog to let all your friends know that you voted! You can also find LGH on Facebook here! Thanks for taking the time to make a difference for this organization and the women that work with them! Have a beautiful weekend! ♥, mK
